

Soon after settlers arrived, school classes began in a log cabin on what is now Division Street. Although the canal was once a means of transportation of goods and passengers, it is now a picturesque link to the past and is the heart of the I & M National Heritage Corridor. In 1848 the I & M canal was opened and Lockport became a port on the 100 mile journey between Lake Michigan and the Illinois river. The city derives its name from the locks that controlled the water level on the canal. Lockport is located on the old Illinois and Michigan Canal, which served as an important mode of transportation in the 1800s. Lockport, Illinois is a town rich in history with the first settlers arriving in the area in 1830. It also serves the communities of Homer Glen, Fairmont, parts of Crest Hill, and parts of Joliet. The Wind Symphony has been featured twice at The Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.Lockport Township High School, or LTHS, is a public high school in Lockport, Illinois, United States. The ensemble has toured multiple recognized world-class concert halls, has been consistently selected to the University of Illinois Superstate Band Festival (three times as the Honor Band), and has made five appearances at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival.In 2008, the Lockport Band Program was awarded the prestigious Sudler Flag from the John Philip Sousa Foundation, recognizing high school band programs that have demonstrated particularly significant high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years.Īdditionally, the Wind Symphony and Lockport Band Program were inaugural recipients of the National Band Association Blue Ribbon of Excellence National Winner and three time National Wind of the Mark of Excellence recipients. In recent years, the Lockport Wind Symphony has earned consistent Superior Division Ratings at state organization contests and has performed at both the National Association for Music Education and Illinois Music Education Conferences. On Saturday’s broadcast, we feature the Lockport Township High School Wind Symphony, another wind ensemble selected by the judges of the 2014 Chicagoland Band Festival at John Hersey High School to appear on Introductions. The Lockport Township High School Wind Symphony was the Honor Band in Class AAAA, the highest class, at the 2015 SuperState Concert Band Festival at the University of Illinois.
